A Restoration (1891). Edouard Joseph Dantan (French, 1848-1897). Oil on canvas.
Dantan portrays the primary sculpture work and those behind, sharp steel tools, and layers of stone dust of the sculptor’s studio and, more significantly, personalizes the depiction of his sculptor, with his intent gaze and hands handling the chisel and hammer. And there’s the semi-nude model whose presence is not required by the work at hand.
